The Story

On June 10, 2011, Jason and Michael had tickets to see Michael’s favorite cabaret artist (Barbara Cook) at Feinsteins. Michael asked Jason to be ready for the 8pm show by 5pm in order to “get good seats and have dinner.” But at 5pm, he surprised Jason with beautiful flowers and asked him to marry him. Upon a tear-filled yes, Michael informed Jason they didn’t have to be at Feinsteins at 5:30, but that they had an appointment at Tiffany’s where they were waiting for them to pick out rings. After selecting engagement rings, the couple walked to Feinsteins and shared a lovely meal before the show.

The pair decided to have a commitment ceremony a year out to allow plenty of time for stress-free planning. And two weeks after their engagement, same-sex marriage was made legal in New York, so the two were able to add “getting legally married” to the plan for Memorial Day weekend. It was extremely important for Jason, an event planner, to not work at his own wedding. “I wanted to be able to relax, be present as a groom, and know that everything would operate smoothly,” he says. “As someone in the industry, it’s known that Abigail Kirsch is a company you go to for this.”

Wedding Style

The couple used their wedding colors of blue and green everywhere, and brought some modern aesthetics to the very historic synagogue. “It’s sort of capitalizing on the fun we wanted everyone to have,” says Jason. They also personalized everything with quotes.
