the story

For Melissa’s birthday, JD decided to surprise her with a weekend away at the Madison Beach Hotel for a culinary tasting and spa weekend. “After dinner, JD wanted to propose in the hotel lobby in front of the Christmas tree, but there were too many people around so he decided to wait until we got back to our room,” says Melissa. “Upon returning to the room, JD mentioned that he had another birthday gift for me, and I, not paying attention, turned around and saw JD down on one knee and he asked me to marry him!”

wedding style

“Our style was a little rustic and a little vintage, with warm orange and summery tones,” says Melissa. “We also wanted to show how this day was really about two families coming together.” The couple incorporated the rustic warmth into all the decor including flowers with huge branches, a tree stump cake topper, amber uplighting and chalkboard signs for the candy bar and specialty drinks. The vintage element was reflected through framed pictures of their families, the hashtag signs and linens & chairs. They even included favors of all their family recipes combined.

memorable moment

Besides the moment of their first dance, Melissa and JD had another moment that stood out from the night. “The band played one of our favorite songs, ‘You and Me’ by DMB. It was one of the songs we were actually contemplating as our first dance, but we chose another one,” remembers Melissa. “We were taking a group picture on the dance floor right before the cake, but when the song came on, we just started randomly dancing by ourselves on the dance floor.”

what guests are saying

“Our guests were literally amazed — everything from the food, execution, the music, decor,” says Melissa. “People still talk about it months later!”
